Each of my paintings is done on an old floral bed sheet that is carefully stretched on a handmade stretcher. Some paintings include collaged shapes cut from multiple floral sheets or repurposed paintings. Using washes and streaks of acrylic, I work intuitively, compelled to conceal and reveal the dated floral patterns that I find simultaneously comforting and repulsive, to transform the homely, predictable patterns into wrinkled innovations. From conception to death, the surface of a bed is a place where one both experiences and escapes reality, a physical connection between dreaming and waking life. Ambivalence drives me to seek out new painting techniques and also to work exclusively on floral bed sheets, which continue to perplex me.
